Gaelic has two forms of the word "to be" - and they cannot be used interchangebly. One is used to communicate 'qualities' -- he is tall, the dog is brown, etc. The other is to communicate identities: Seumas is a policeman. It is a big dog, etc. These two different uses -- which employ the same verb "be" in English, require quite different verbs in Gaelic.
